Section 5

Competence, training and supervision

5.1 Staffing and supervision ratios for children's classes

As part of CM Studios' safeguarding and supervision commitment, Control & Move Fitness CIC sets its own staff-to-participant supervision standard for all children's classes and sessions, which is higher (more protective) than the minimum ratios recommended by governing bodies and insurers.

  • Minimum supervision ratio: at least 1 responsible adult to every 8 children in all classes and sessions.
  • Minimum of two responsible adults: a minimum of two responsible adults must be present at all times during children's classes and sessions.

Supervision arrangements (including ratios and the deployment of staff/volunteers) will be determined and reviewed as part of each class risk assessment, taking account of the factors listed below and any venue-specific requirements.

Supervision levels will be determined by the activity risk assessment and will take account of:

  • CM Studios' minimum supervision ratio for children's sessions (see section 5.1) and the requirement for a minimum of two responsible adults to be present at all times;
  • age and number of participants;
  • ability and experience;
  • additional needs or vulnerabilities;
  • the type of activity and equipment;
  • the venue and available space;
  • the likelihood and seriousness of foreseeable harm; and
  • whether the session is delivered indoors, outdoors or in a public setting.
